Know where to go

Urgent care vs. emergency care

Urgent care — concerns that should be seen soon

  • Sudden-onset vomiting or diarrhea, with or without blood, while your pet is quiet but still alert and otherwise stable.
  • Minor cuts, scrapes, or small puncture wounds with minimal bleeding.
  • A mild allergic reaction with itching, mild odor, hot spots, rashes, or swelling of the face or muzzle without breathing changes.

Emergency — serious or life-threatening

  • Repeated vomiting or diarrhea paired with weakness or collapse, severe lethargy, inability to keep down water, or a painful or bloated abdomen.
  • Deep wounds involving the eyes, chest, or abdomen; uncontrolled bleeding; visible bone; or major trauma.
  • A severe allergic reaction with significant swelling of the face or muzzle, breathing changes, pale gums, weakness, or collapse.
