Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. We require a pre-operative examination with a veterinarian to assess your pet's health, discuss the procedure, and answer questions. This is also the right time to perform recommended bloodwork and confirm your pet is a good candidate for anesthesia.
Before the surgery date, you'll also have a pre-surgical consultation with a veterinary technician to review procedure-specific instructions, consent forms, pre-medications, and what to expect on the day of the procedure.
A veterinary technician will discuss a customized plan with you during the pre-surgical consultation. The plan generally includes pre-surgical medications to improve anesthetic safety and help your pet feel calm and comfortable. Following current AAHA recommendations, we favour shorter, individualized fasting times rather than prolonged overnight fasting. Your pet's specific instructions will be provided.
Most patients recover in Casco Pet WELLKennels, which are designed for comfort and safety. They are warmer and quieter than traditional cages, include gentle heating and calming light settings, and give our veterinary team clear visibility so we can closely monitor your pet.
We take pain management very seriously and use medication before, during, and after surgery to keep your pet as comfortable as possible. Most pets go home with a pain plan tailored to their procedure and recovery needs. We also use laser therapy as a standard part of post-operative care to help reduce pain and inflammation and support wound healing.
Recovery time depends on the procedure. We'll send you home with clear aftercare instructions and timelines specific to your pet.
Yes. We schedule a follow-up visit for most procedures to check healing, remove sutures if needed, and make sure your pet is recovering as expected. We'll arrange this before you leave on the day of surgery. If you have concerns before the scheduled follow-up, contact us right away.
Just your pet and any paperwork we provided ahead of time. You're also welcome to bring an item that smells familiar, such as a blanket, towel, toy, or worn piece of clothing, to help your pet feel more comfortable during their stay.
